Gifts for Girls Who Love to Surf
Cold water surfing hits different. Living in the PNW, the water temps rarely veer above 58 and summer days can be a blanket of cold dense fog. It’s a painful sport to love, full of stiff fingers, numb toes, and chills that run so deep it takes a full hour of the heater blasting to feel normal again. There’s something so innately beautiful about coldwater surfing. It’s hardy and never feels easy. It's smoky, damp campfires and leather boots. Here’s a few gift picks for women surfers who brave the cold. Many of these picks are from woman-owned brands that we love, and hope you will too! Enjoy.
W Kassia Surfwax Palo Santo “Triangle Stack” - Palo Santo scented surfwax from one of the most creative surfers, need I say more? Support women, smell good. I can’t think of a better stocking stuffer for a female surfer.
W Seea Swimsuit / Dara LongSleeve- I love hanging out at the beach, but I really try to avoid sun exposure. I love this long-sleeve suit that is comfortable, looks great, and covers shoulders and arms from the sun. I probably wouldn’t wear this under a wetsuit, more for the elusive sunny PNW beach day!
W Everyday Oil - The last two girl trips I’ve been in, I’ve shown up, and both my roommate and I have a bottle of Everyday Oil. It’s a nice light oil that absorbs easily and smells amazing. I was very into Mainstay, which has Palo Santo main scent, but I’ve just recently switched to Warm Feelings. It’s a bright citrusy scent, with a hint (not overwhelming) of patchouli. I put this on my hair ends and face after a surf.
W Left on Friday Club Top- I just ordered this bikini and will do a full review later, but it’s made for small boobs and features support without an underwire. It looks incredibly comfortable and has no ties, a mandate for bikinis worn under a wetsuit. Left on Friday is a Canadian brand and pretty much everyone I know gushes over the quality of these suits.
Jetboil Flash- Again, surfing in the PNW is a cold endeavour, and there is nothing more satisfying after a cold surf than a hot beverage. The Jetboil is portable and the quickest way to boil a few cups of water for you and a friend. Tea, Coffee, Hot Toddy’s. Seize the day.
W Women Making Waves: This a very beautiful book highlighting influential women in the surfing orb. From professional surfers to activists, this a lovely modern glance at surfing.
W Surf Durt - Reef safe and food-grade sunscreen. This surf-tested sunscreen is super-thick, protective, and available in multiple skin shade colors. This is not an everyday sunscreen; it's better for surf-specific protection for a long session in the water.
DB Surf Tote- Waterproof tote to throw your wet gear in. Big enough for your 5.4 wetsuit, booties, and gloves, and a change robe. Great for carrying and throwing your gear in the back of the car.
Blundstone Thermal Boots- Living in the PNW, surfing is brutally cold. Both the water and the weather post-session. These leather boots keep sand out while trudging across the beach and feature a wool insole to warm up cold feet. Plus, your stiff, cold fingers appreciate the ease of a pull-on boot.
W Plow Surf Co. Bloomin Groover Surf Hat- Ok, so cold-weather surfers don’t generally wear surf hats due to wearing hooded wetsuits, but….we all travel to warm-weather destinations, and this surf hat is so cute. I just discovered this brand, founded by a nurse with a personal experience with loss due to melanoma.
Finisterre Women’s Skye Waterproof Parka- The PNW is misty and cold. Even when not full-on raining, it’s nice to have a warm, waterproof jacket you can depend on. Plus, this one is so stylish, I wear it around town just as often. Based out of the UK, Finisterre knows a thing or two about the cold water surf lifestyle. We love their swimsuits too.
GSI Microlite Twist 500: Can you tell how much I adore a hot drink? This insulated mug keeps beverages hot for hours. Plus, it is crazy lightweight and leakproof, perfect to throw in a backpack. Make your drink at home and have a steaming mug of coffee on hand post-surf to take the chill off.
